History of Ad Hoc Networks?

* In 1972, DoD-sponsored Packet Radio Network (PRNET)

- To provide packed switched networking to mobile battlefield elements in an infrastructureless, hostile environments (between tanks, aircrafts, soldiers, etc)

- It used a combination of ALOHA and CSMA, and a kind of distance-vector routing

* In the early 1990s, the idea of an infrastructureless collection of mobile hosts was proposed the commercial “Ad Hoc networking”

* DoD-sponsored GloMo (Global Mobile Information Systems) Project

- To provide office-environment Ethernet-type multimedia connectivity anytime, anywhere, in handheld devices.

- Ad Hoc application, routing and MAC protocols were developed.

* IETF MANET WG

- They studying about adaptation of the Ad Hoc networks to private wireless LAN, such as Home and /or Office environments

- Standardization of Internet Protocol Adaptation, Routing and Interface, etc.

- MANET concentrated development of an optimal routing protocols for efficient communication among Ad Hoc devices

- MANET WG developed into two type of routing protocols which are reactive (routes on-demand) and proactive (routes ready-to-use).
